Should you press the clutch when braking hard?

Nov 29, 2023

When many people encounter an emergency, their first reaction is to step on the brakes and never think of stepping on the clutch. Because I have the impression that if the clutch is depressed when braking in an emergency, the engine's anti-drag braking will disappear, which will increase the braking distance and affect safety.

Potential effects of applying only the brake but not the clutch during emergency braking:

ABS affected

Without depressing the clutch, the anti-drag braking force of the engine may affect the normal operation of the ABS system. In extreme cases, it may affect the control, such as the effect of emergency avoidance maneuvers. It is even more dangerous if the road is slippery.

Will flame out

The result of only applying the brake without depressing the clutch will inevitably be stalling. Although the braking distance has not changed, there is still the possibility of a secondary accident after braking. If you stall when the second danger comes, it will be too much to escape. The time it takes to come up with several operating steps is also a safety hazard.

So what is the correct operation when braking suddenly? Riders said that when braking suddenly, the clutch and brake should be depressed at the same time. Even if the final effect is almost the same between pressing on the clutch and not pressing on the clutch, the potential harm must still be taken into consideration.
