Functions of clutch:
1. Make sure the car starts smoothly.
Before starting, the car is in a stationary state. If the engine is rigidly connected to the transmission, once in gear, the car will rush forward abruptly due to sudden power contact, which will not only cause damage to the components, but also the driving force is not enough to overcome the great inertia caused by the car's rush, causing the engine speed to drop sharply and stall. If the engine and gearbox are separated temporarily by the clutch at the start, then the clutch engages gradually. Due to the phenomenon of slippage between the active and driven parts of the clutch, the torque from the clutch increases gradually from zero while the driving force of the car increases gradually, thus allowing the car to start smoothly.
2. Make shifting easier.
Different gearbox gears are frequently changed during driving to adapt to changing driving conditions. If there is no clutch to temporarily separate the engine from the transmission, then the meshing transmission gears in the transmission will be difficult to separate because the load has not been removed and the pressure between the meshing tooth surfaces is very high. The other pair of meshing gears will be difficult to engage due to their different circumferential speeds. Even forced entry into mesh can produce a great impact on the tooth end and easily damage the machine parts. If the engine and gearbox are separated temporarily by clutch and shifted, the pressure between the mating surfaces of the pair of gears that were engaged before will be greatly reduced and they will be easily separated due to the load relief. For the other pair of gears to be meshed, due to the small moment of inertia when the drive gear is separated from the engine, proper shifting can make the circumferential speed of the gears to be meshed equal or close to the same, thus avoiding or reducing the impact between the gears.
3. Prevent the transmission system from overloading.
When the vehicle is braked in an emergency, the wheels suddenly decelerate sharply, while the transmission system connected to the engine maintains the original speed due to the inertia of rotation, which often generates inertia moment in the transmission system that is much larger than the engine torque, making the parts of the transmission system vulnerable to damage. Since the clutch transfers torque by friction, the main and driven parts of the clutch slip automatically when the load in the transmission system exceeds the torque that the friction can transfer, thus preventing the transmission system from overloading.
4. Reduce torsional vibration shock.
The working principle of the automotive engine determines the unsteady output torque. On the power stroke, the combustion chamber gas explosion produces a great impact torque, while on other strokes it relies on the inertia of the anti-drag engine. Although the inertia of the engine's own rotating system can reduce torsional vibration, the remaining impact force still has a negative impact on the subsequent transmission and drive shaft. The vibration damper springs (tangential distribution) in the clutch can significantly reduce the torsional vibration impact caused by the engine and extend the life of the transmission gear.
Working principles of clutch:
The active part and the driven part of the clutch transfer torque either by means of friction between the contact surfaces or by means of fluid as the transmission medium (hydraulic coupling) or by means of magnetic drive (electromagnetic clutch), so that the two parts can be separated temporarily and joined gradually, while the two parts are allowed to rotate mutually during the transmission process.
At present, friction clutch pressed by spring is widely used in automobiles. The torque from the engine is transmitted to clutch disc through the friction between the flywheel and the contact surface of the clutch cover and clutch disc. When the driver depresses the clutch pedal, the large end of the diaphragm spring drives the clutch cover to move back through the transmission of the components. At this time, the driven part is separated from the active part.
Operating essentials of clutch:
When lifting the clutch pedal, it is necessary to follow the operating principle of "quick, slow and triple action". When starting, push the clutch pedal with sharp movements, one foot to the bottom, so that the clutch is completely separated.
The so-called "fast, slow and triple" is the process of lifting the clutch pedal in three stages. At the beginning, it is lifted fast. When the clutch cover of the clutch is felt to gradually integrate into the semi-linkage, the lifting speed of the pedal begins to slow down. During the process of semi-linkage to full integration, the clutch pedal is lifted slowly. When the clutch pedal is raised, the accelerator pedal should be pushed down gradually according to the power of the engine so that the car can start smoothly. The throttle should be operated smoothly and properly, increasing the throttle only when the clutch is fully engaged.
Fault diagnoses of clutch:
1. Abnormal noise
Symptom: Abnormal noise when clutch disengages or engages.
Reason: Lack of lubricant in release bearing, resulting in dry friction or bearing damage; There is no clearance between the release bearing and the inner end of the release lever. Heavy oil and dust between sleeve and guide tube of release bearing or fatigue, breakage and shedding of return spring of release bearing and pedal result in poor return of release bearing; Loose combination between the spline hole of clutch disc and its spline shaft; Annealed fatigue or breakage of damping spring of clutch disc; Rivets of friction plate of clutch disc are loose or rivets are loose or rivet heads are exposed.
Diagnosis and removal: Press the clutch pedal slightly so that the release bearing contacts the release lever. If there is a sound, it will be abnormal for the bearing. If there is still abnormal noise after filling, the bearing is excessively worn and loose and damaged, it should be replaced. Push down the lifting clutch pedal and replace the return spring of the release bearing if there is an intermittent crash sound indicating that the release bearing is moving in front of and behind. If there is a noise when the clutch just engages or just separates when the pedal is pressed continuously, the rivet of the disc is loose or exposed, the clutch disc should be replaced.
2. Incomplete separation
Symptom: When the engine is idling, press the clutch pedal, the gear hits the gear and is difficult to hook in. If you can barely hook up, the engine will completely stall when the clutch pedal is not fully relaxed.
Reason: Excessive free travel of clutch pedal; Bending deformation of release lever, loose support and dislodgement of bearing pin make it difficult to adjust the height of inner end of release lever. The release lever is not adjusted properly so that the inner end is not in the same plane or the height of the inner end is too low. Improper adjustment of limit screw of intermediate clutch cover in two-disc clutch, fatigue of individual separation spring, insufficient height or breakage, and inflexible axial movement of intermediate clutch cover on drive pin or in clutch drive window; Clutch disc plate warped, friction plate broken or rivet loosened; The new friction plate is too thick or the front and back of clutch disc is misfitted; Clutch disc spline hole and transmission first shaft spline shaft strap; Oil leakage in clutch hydraulic actuating mechanism with insufficient air or oil; Elastic force of diaphragm spring decreases; Engine support is worn or damaged. Engine crankshaft is different from transmission input shaft.
Diagnosis and removal: Check free travel of clutch pedal in automobile, adjust if free travel is too large, check for insufficient oil in reservoir or air in pipeline for hydraulic actuating mechanism and remove necessary; Check the height of inner end of release lever, adjust it if the release lever is too low or not on the same plane, otherwise check clutch disc assembly, and continue to check if there is no problem; Check whether clutch disc warps and deformed rivets have fallen off, whether clutch disc moves axially with the tape and if so, replace or repair it.
3. Clutch slipping
Symptom: When a car starts in low gear, it cannot start or is difficult to start when the clutch pedal is relaxed. When the vehicle is accelerating, the speed can not be increased with the increase of engine speed, and it feels powerless to drive. In serious cases, burning odor or smoke will occur.
Reason: The clutch pedal does not travel freely, causing the release bearing to press against the release lever; The working surface of clutch disc friction plate, clutch cover or flywheel is worn seriously, the connection between clutch cover and flywheel is loose and the compression force is weakened; Oil stain, ablation, surface hardening, rivet exposure and surface irregularity of friction plate of clutch disc reduce friction coefficient; Fatigue or breakage of pressure spring and fatigue or breakage of diaphragm spring reduce the compression force; The clutch lever is stuck and the oil and dust between the release bearing sleeve and the guide tube are so heavy that the release bearing can not return to its original position. The separating rod is deformed due to bending and motion interference and can not be returned.
Diagnosis and removal: Check free travel of clutch pedal and adjust if not in accordance with regulations; If the free travel is normal, remove the transmission and check whether the connecting bolts of the clutch and flywheel are loose and tighten if they are loose. If the clutch still slips, remove the clutch and check the condition of the friction plates on clutch disc. If there is oil stain, it can be washed and dried with gasoline, then the source of oil stain can be found out and eliminated as far as possible. If the friction plate is badly worn or the rivets are exposed, replace the clutch disc. If the clutch disc is in good condition, remove the clutch, check the compression spring and replace it if the elasticity is too soft.
